Types of Deadlocks for Doors

Hook bolt deadlocks are installed on aluminum sliding narrow stile storefront doors to increase security and strength of locks. The locks are keyed on both sides for greater flexibility in access control.

To measure accurately for a new lock, you must first determine the door's case thickness (or backset). This is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the latch hole.

Tubular Latch

The tubular latch is the most sought-after door latch. It's easy and simple to install, making it a favourite of Joiners and DIY enthusiasts alike. It's also available in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and levels to suit any style of door handle.

A tubular latch features a rectangular steel casing which has a spring-loaded followinger and the latch bolt (also known as a striker). When you open the door the latch retracts, allowing you to lock and shut the door. When you close the door, the latch bolt springs back and grasps the edge of the frame to secure the door closed.

You'll need to decide on the size of the latch on the door before you install it. Many people believe that a lock and handle should be set at a height of one metre above the floor. However, this isn't the situation. When door knobs are involved the latch should be situated in the middle of the rail - this is where the majority of the weight is placed when you open and close the door.

Once you've determined where the latch should be then mark the location of the hole on the door and strike plate with the help of a pencil. Drill pilot holes to secure the plate. After you've drilled the pilot holes, you can use a countersink to ensure the plate's back will be flush with the door after it's been screwed into place.

Consider a double-sprung lock for those who require a more durable alternative to the tubular lock. The door will close more smoothly when you choose this latch, as it has a separate spring that moves the tongue. It also has a powerful spring on the spindle follower, which ensures that levers or doorknobs return to their original horizontal position after each use.

Once you have put the latch on the door, you will have to install a strike plate in the frame. The strike plate is a piece that is inserted into the gap left by the latch after it's closed. To do this, mark where you want the strike plate to sit on the frame section that surrounds it. Use a knife to cut an appropriate square for the plate and then remove it.

Cylindrical Latch

Interior doors are often fitted with cylindrical locks. They can be located in offices and homes and are extremely versatile in terms of their uses. Cylindrical locks work similar to mortise lock systems however they are much less complicated and easier to install. They do not require a pocket or "mortise," to be cut into the door's frame like mortise lock systems do. They are simply inserted into a hole or bore that is cut into the door's face. They come in a variety of types and are compatible with both knobs and levers to shut and open the door.

The main difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that cylinder locks can only be opened using the right type of key. The pins are secured by springs and pins of different heights. When the correct key is inserted and the pins are aligned with one another, and the cylinder can rotate. This allows the latch bolts to retract and allow the door to be opened.

If the wrong key has been used, the pins aren't aligned correctly, which stops the cylinder from moving. It's important that you use the correct key to gain access to your home or office.

There are also small notches carved from the cylinder's sides that are a match to key notches. They are designed to align when the appropriate key is placed in. Once the cylinder moves, it will also move the latch bolt in tandem.

A strike plate is an attached plate that catches the projected lock latch bolt. The strike plate is generally constructed from steel and is it is secured to the door frame with screws. It also has a strike opening which the latch bolt of the lock is inserted.

Use the right tools to remove the handle or knob of the old lock as well as the latch bolt. After the old hardware has been removed, mark the position of the new latch bolt and strike opening on the door and frame. It's a good idea to check the operation of your lock by pressing against the latch bolt or strike plate by using your finger. If the strike plate or latch bolt is damaged or doesn't operate correctly, you should consider replacing them.

Key-Locked Latch

This kind of lock is controlled using an outside key and a knob or lever on the inside. It is used in places in which the unauthorized use of the lock isn't an issue, such as office doors. This kind of lock allows the outside lever to be in a locked or unlocked position and the inside knob is always open for immediate exit. The key is required only to pull the latchbolt back after the door has been shut.

The pins of a keylock are aligned and point at a point called the shearline. When the key that is correct slides into a lock, these pins are aligned with the shear line and the plug can be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've had a key that was perfectly fitted into a lock but still isn't able to open it could be because one of the pins aren't aligned with the shear line.

Some locks also feature a face plate, which is affixed to the door's edge. It can be decorative and provide protection and security to the locking mechanism. These plates are typically found on mortice locks, rim locks and locks with reversed springs.

There is also a strike plate which is usually connected to the jamb and frame of the door and is fitted with a hole to guide the bolt from the cylinder to the lock. It is typically used in conjunction with deadbolts for added security.

The cylinder is the last part, and it holds pins that are aligned with the key's edge to stop it from spinning. A high-quality cylinder is very difficult to break into if you don't have the right tools and knowledge of how to pick it. To lock doors the key has to be turned in the same direction that the door is opened. If the door opens using the right hand, for instance, the key will need to be turned clockwise in order to lock the door. To unlock the door, the key needs to be turned counterclockwise. This differs from other locks which require you to turn the key in the opposite direction of the way the door opens, like a Chubb lock.

Keyless Latch

Keyless latches allow you to lock and unlock your door without the use of a traditional key. These locks can be operated with the smartphone app or access code and some models include a hidden camera for added security. When choosing a keyless latch, consider your security needs and compatibility with your hardware and doors. Some keyless locks require special door preparation or modifications therefore, make sure to review the specifications of the manufacturer and installation instructions prior to installing.

Several companies are developing smart locks that can replace traditional keys and provide additional security features. They are more robust and can be locked through the use of a code, fingerprint or facial recognition. Certain smart locks also come with security features that can detect when a door has been opened with an unauthorized key or force.

One company, called Latch has created an attractive high-tech lock that operates similar to other smart locks. Its primary market is real estate companies who manage apartment buildings. The tenants can open the lock by using a passcode key or a mobile device. They are also able to let in cleaners, dog walkers or guests from outside of town with temporary codes. The company claims that this will eliminate the need for tenants losing their keys and cut down on the cost of maintenance since there is no need to replace locks if a renter moves out.

Although the Latch lock isn't yet available to the general public but it is likely to find a place in condos and large apartments. The company has already begun testing the lock in a handful of places, and plans to launch additional units over the course of the year. The price is roughly the same as a standard lock, and the company also offers competitive pricing and affordable costs for software.
